PH Navy Confirms Potential Acquisition of Japanese Abukuma-Class Destroyer Escorts

Manila: The Philippine Navy (PN) on Sunday revealed the "possible transfer" of Abukuma-class destroyer escorts from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). This announcement marks a significant development in the growing defense cooperation between the two nations.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PN is currently preparing for a Joint Visual Inspection (JVI) of these naval vessels after receiving an official invitation from Japan's Ministry of Defense. This inspection is a critical step in the exploratory discussions concerning the potential acquisition of these ships. The Abukuma-class destroyer escorts are designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, matching the PN's operational needs to safeguard the Philippines' maritime domains.

The Abukuma-class destroyer escorts, with a displacement of 2,000 gross tons, measure 109 meters in length and have a beam of 44 meters. These ships can achieve a top speed of 27 knots and are outfitted with various anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine rockets, torpedoes, a 76mm main gun, and a 20mm close-in weapon system. The JMSDF originally operated six of these vessels, constructed between 1988 and 1991.

A team of naval experts from the PN is set to be dispatched to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the ships. "The outcome of this inspection will guide further deliberations on the potential acquisition and its alignment with the PN's modernization efforts," the PN stated.

This initiative signifies a strengthening strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan, reinforcing their shared commitment to maritime security, interoperability, and regional peace and stability.
