Manila: Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized the necessity for the Philippines to expand its fleet of "multi-role fighters" (MRFs) to safeguard its vast territory from potential threats.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro highlighted during an exclusive interview with select reporters that acquiring a significant number of MRFs at once is crucial due to cost efficiency. He explained that ordering only a few units initially and more in subsequent years could lead to a tripling of costs. The secretary underscored that the Philippines requires a minimum of 40 MRFs, although he acknowledged that this number is relatively low compared to other countries, which have fleets ranging from 100 to 220 MRFs.

When asked about the possibility of increasing the proposal to 75 MRFs, equivalent to an air wing, Teodoro expressed openness to the idea, citing Thailand's example of ordering 100 units and adding another 50. He assured that the program would be expedited once funding is approved and released for an adequate number of MRFs, indicating his readiness to act swiftly when financial resources are available.

Teodoro also mentioned his desire for the MRF program to be comprehensive, including "airborne warning and control system" (AWACS) and aerial tankers for mid-air refueling. These additions would ensure the operational effectiveness of the MRFs as part of a cohesive force package. AWACS are equipped with advanced radars for early warning and target detection, while aerial tankers extend the range of fighter and attack aircraft by refueling them mid-air through a probe-and-drogue system.
