Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Paraguayan President Santiago Pe±a Palacios took significant strides in enhancing diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Paraguay by witnessing the signing of two pivotal agreements. The event took place during a bilateral meeting held at Malaca±ang, focusing on strengthening cooperation and fostering closer ties between the two nations.

According to Philippines News Agency, the first agreement is a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on mutual cooperation in diplomatic training. This MOU, signed by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and Paraguay's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, establishes a framework for cooperative activities. It encompasses diplomatic training, skills development, information exchange, and academic cooperation projects, marking a significant step in enhancing diplomatic skills and knowledge-sharing between the two countries.

In addition to the MOU, the Philippines and Paraguay signed an agreement that waives visa requirements for holders of ordinary passports. This agreement grants visa-free entry privileges to Filipino and Paraguayan ordinary passport holders, aimed at facilitating tourism, business, and people-to-people exchanges. The move is expected to boost tourism and deepen cultural and economic ties between the two nations.

The signing of these agreements coincides with Pe±a's historic visit to the Philippines, marking the first visit by a Paraguayan president to the country. During the visit, Pe±a highlighted Paraguay's view of the Philippines as an important gateway to Southeast Asia and expressed a keen interest in strengthening ties with ASEAN.

The leaders also explored opportunities to expand cooperation in various sectors, including trade, food security, renewable energy, and regional connectivity, signaling a commitment to broadening the scope of their bilateral relations.
