Bras­lia: The Philippines and Brazil are set to enhance their bilateral relations across several sectors, notably trade, investment, and agriculture, as per the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). This development follows the formalization of cooperative agreements between the two nations on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro engaged in discussions with Brazil's President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva regarding potential expansions in areas such as defense, science and technology, and education. These discussions took place during Lazaro's courtesy visit on August 12 at the Palacio da Alvorada in Bras­lia, Brazil. The DFA highlighted that this courtesy call is a significant milestone in the relationship between the Philippines and Brazil, underscoring both governments' commitment to fostering stronger political, economic, and cultural ties.

In another meeting, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced Brazil's intention to extend technical assistance to the Philippines to bolster its sugarcane industry. While specific details were not disclosed, the DFA indicated that the assistance will focus on capacity-building initiatives for local farmers and agronomists.

On the same day, Secretary Lazaro signed several new bilateral memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with Brazil, which formalize cooperation in energy, tourism, sports, and sectors related to science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. She emphasized Manila's commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and amplifying mutual interests in regional and international forums, particularly in the context of ASEAN-Brazil relations.

Lazaro's official visit to Bras­lia serves as a reciprocal gesture following Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira's planned official visit to Manila in August 2024, which will be the first-ever visit by a Brazilian foreign minister to the Philippines. This visit also coincides with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Brazil, established on July 4, 1946.

Reflecting on the milestone anniversary of diplomatic relations, Secretary Lazaro expressed that it provides an opportunity for both countries to assess the progress of their bilateral relations, address upcoming challenges, and envision a future where their strengthened partnership yields tangible benefits for their respective populations.
