PH, WIPO Members Ink Riyadh Design Law Treaty.

Riyadh: The Philippines and members of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have recently signed the Riyadh Design Law Treaty (DLT), marking a significant step towards creating an international framework that updates, streamlines, and standardizes rules on design protection. According to Philippines News Agency, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) announced that the treaty was signed on November 21 during the Riyadh Diplomatic Conference in Riyadh. IPOPHL highlighted that the treaty facilitates a predictable and cost-efficient design application process by establishing limits on application requirements. It also offers flexibility for applicants by permitting multiple designs per filing and allowing designs to be represented in various formats, such as drawings, photographs, or videos where permissible. The DLT introduces several provisions, including minimal filing date requirements, a 12-month grace period for disclosures, and a six-month option to keep designs unpu blished from the filing date. It also provides relief for missed deadlines, simplifies renewal procedures, and promotes e-filings and digital processes, all aimed at reducing application challenges that might result in the loss of rights. IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba expressed that the Philippines, along with WIPO member states, shares the common objective of facilitating easier protection for designers' work and expanding their opportunities on a global scale. Barba added that the goals of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty align with the ongoing efforts and long-term plans of the current administration to promote and develop creative and innovative industries. This is particularly vital for developing and middle-income countries like the Philippines, as it supports their aspirations to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.
