Manila: The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has assured the public that treatment for hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is covered under its benefit packages, with financial assistance amounting to PHP18,135. In an advisory on Monday, the state insurer said the disease primarily affects children under five years old, but older children and adults can also contract the illness.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 7,598 cases from Jan. 1 to Feb. 22, 2025. HFMD is a highly contagious viral infection, but it usually resolves on its own within seven to 10 days. However, PhilHealth and the DOH advise immediate consultation with healthcare professionals if severe symptoms, such as persistent high fever or difficulty in breathing, are observed.
To prevent the spread of HFMD, everyone is reminded to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the toilet. Close contact with infected individuals, such as holding hands or kissing, must be avoided. Utensils, food, drinks, towels, or personal items must not be shared.
Parents and caregivers must clean and disinfect toys and frequently touched objects like doorknobs, tables, and mobile phones. Children must be taught not to put unclean fingers or objects in their mouths. Symptomatic children must be properly isolated and kept at home, and not be sent to school. Cleanliness at home and in schools to reduce the risk of transmission must be maintained.
For more information on PhilHealth benefits and services related to HFMD and other illnesses, the public is encouraged to contact PhilHealth offices or visit their official website and social media platforms.
