Extortion Suspected as Motive in Grenade Attack on Construction Company in N. Cotabato

Kabacan: Police are investigating a grenade attack on a construction supply company here Sunday night, with extortion being a primary motive. Lt. Col. April Lou Palma, municipal police chief, told reporters Monday that the attack occurred around 7 p.m. inside the compound of Tamontaka Builders in Barangay Poblacion.

According to Philippines News Agency, one of the two men riding on a motorbike was seen on a closed-circuit security camera tossing what appeared to be a fragmentation grenade toward the compound and quickly fled. Seconds later, a loud explosion followed. No one was hurt, but the blast caused minor damage to parked construction equipment and instilled fear among residents.

An officer of the company said it has no known adversaries, Palma stated. Police investigators are working to determine if the firm had received extortion demands from lawless elements. Kabacan Mayor Evangeline Pascua Guzman condemned the attack and urged local police to fast-track the investigation and implement measures to prevent similar incidents.
