Pasay City: The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has announced the potential acquisition of Japanese-made multi-role fighters (MRFs) as part of its efforts to modernize its defense capabilities. This consideration comes amidst ongoing plans to upgrade the Air Force's fleet to better meet the country's defense needs.
According to Philippines News Agency, Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura, during a media briefing at Villamor Air Base, confirmed that the PAF is exploring the possibility of including Mitsubishi fighters, specifically the F-2, in their future acquisition programs. Cordura highlighted the existing contract for the Korea Aerospace Industries-made FA-50 Block 70 jets, signed on June 4, which is already in the pipeline with a delivery schedule from 2026 to 2030.
The contract for the FA-50 Block 70 jets, valued at USD700 million, includes 12 units and is part of an ongoing effort to enhance the Air Force's operational capabilities. These jets are described as significantly more capable compared to the first batch of 12 FA-50PH units delivered between 2015 and 2017, with a top speed of Mach 1.5.
Lt. Gen. Cordura emphasized that the selection of future multi-role fighters will depend on the Department of National Defense's evaluation, particularly in terms of integrating these platforms within the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC). He noted that Japanese-made platforms, like the Mitsubishi F-2, could potentially align with the country's territorial defense plan.
The Mitsubishi F-2, a derivative of the F-16C, is manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in collaboration with Lockheed Martin for the Japan Air Self Defense Force. It boasts a maximum speed of Mach 2.0 and a combat range of 450 nautical miles, equipped with a 20mm cannon and capable of carrying various missiles, rockets, and munitions.
