Shanghai: As part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China this year, the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai, China, highlighted the historic launch of the 'Friendship Mural: A Philippines-China Art Collaboration,' on Nov. 30, 2025. Composed of two 2.1m x 1.8m paintings, which can be connected, the work was created through the collaboration of Filipino and Chinese artists, and was inaugurated at the VFS Global office in Huangpu District, Shanghai, a municipality in eastern China.
According to Philippines News Agency, the work was presented to approximately 130 guests, including representatives from the business community, media, and members of the Filipino community in Shanghai, Chinese and foreign friends, as well as the artists' families and friends. To mark the occasion, Jaime A. FlorCruz, Philippine Ambassador to China, attended the event.
The ambassador emphasized that the Friendship Mural is a dialogue, not just a painting. He noted that from Nov. 22 to 28, multi-awarded artists from the Philippines and China worked together to create the artwork. They shared techniques, exchanged stories, and united their cultural perspectives in a single vision. FlorCruz remarked that the mural reflects a fusion of heritages and mutual feelings, culminating in a powerful narrative of respect and understanding.
The artists involved in this project include two Filipinos, Melvin Pollero and Jensen Moreno, and two Chinese, Vance Yuan and CuriousBoy. In her separate speech, Myca Magnolia Fischer, Consul General of the Philippines in Shanghai, highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating that the mural underscores the value of people-to-people exchanges.
Fischer expressed that while governments may sign agreements, it is individuals-students, teachers, artists, businesspeople, workers, and families-who bring international relations to life. Every cultural exchange and co-creation deepens mutual understanding and strengthens the foundation for the future.
The Friendship Mural was on display until Dec. 8, 2025, on the second floor of the VFS Global office in the Huangpu district, Shanghai. Afterward, it will be moved to the Philippine Consulate General building in Shanghai, where it will have a permanent home.
The initiative was jointly organized by the Consulate General of the Philippines in Shanghai, Metrobank Foundation Inc., Liwayway (China) Co., Ltd., Goodfarmer Foods Holding (Group) Co. Ltd., Dai-Ichi Electronics Shanghai, and Bela Fiesta Filipino Restaurant. This was the second and final activity organized by the Consulate General for the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and China, following the 'Flavors and Friendship Festival' held in April in Jiading district.
