Washington: The Philippines is not closing its doors on the possibility of acquiring 20 Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets from the United States, Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez said Tuesday. At a US-Philippines Society press conference, the envoy stated that while the potential purchase 'is not within budget,' discussions between the Philippines and Lockheed Martin are ongoing.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine government had previously expressed its interest by submitting a letter of intent to procure 16 F-16C Block 70/72 fighter jets and four F-16D Block 70/72 aircraft from the U.S. In April, the U.S. Department of State announced the approval of a potential foreign military sale of 20 Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets for approximately USD5.58 billion. However, in September, Romualdez disclosed that the Philippines has put plans on hold mainly due to funding issues.
The Philippines is set to receive at least USD2.5 billion in defense capabilities from 2026 to 2030 after the U.S. Senate approved a bill authorizing new foreign military financing last December. Romualdez mentioned that this allocation is expected to be used primarily for defense capabilities on the ground, maritime security, and cyber security. He added, 'We just have to wait and see on how we can move forward on that particular item.'
