Pasay city: Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, serving as the Philippines' Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, announced that the Philippines has refined its priority agenda for its 2026 ASEAN Chairship. During a press briefing, Lazaro outlined the country's commitment to lead ASEAN in enhancing regional security, advancing digital transformation, addressing climate concerns, and promoting people-centered development.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lazaro emphasized the importance of maintaining a rules-based and outward-looking ASEAN Political-Security Community. She highlighted the goal of achieving lasting peace, security, and stability in the region amidst current tensions and conflicts. The Philippines aims to deepen regional cooperation to sustain peace, manage tensions, and equip ASEAN to respond effectively to security challenges, including issues related to maritime security, cybersecurity, counterterrorism, adherence to international law, and the utilization of artificial intelligence technologies.
The announcement follows President Ferdinand R. Marcos's introduction of Lazaro's appointment during the launch of the Philippines' ASEAN 2026 chairship in Manila. President Marcos stressed the importance of dialogue, adherence to international law, and enhanced cooperation for peace and stability in Southeast Asia. He expressed confidence in ASEAN's potential to strengthen its role as a global force for peace and progress through cooperation and understanding.
Lazaro further stated that fostering regional stability and resilience against emerging threats is a key priority. She pointed out that a dynamic ASEAN must adapt to a rapidly changing environment by implementing practical and policy frameworks to address emerging threats and leverage AI technologies.
Another major priority for the Philippines' chairship is creating a "future-ready ASEAN" with a focus on cross-border digital trade, interoperable digital systems, strengthened supply chains, support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and enhanced economic security. Lazaro emphasized that achieving these objectives will help ASEAN remain competitive amid global uncertainty.
Climate action will also be a defining pillar of the Philippines' agenda, as the country seeks to champion regional efforts on disaster risk reduction, climate finance, and renewable energy, addressing shared vulnerabilities across Southeast Asia.
Lazaro underscored the need for ASEAN cooperation to deliver tangible benefits to its people, highlighting priorities such as social protection, mobility, opportunities for women and youth, and support for migrant workers. She noted that the principles of being people-oriented, people-centered, future-proof, and future-ready will guide the Philippines' ASEAN chairship.
Preparations are underway as the Philippines gears up to host hundreds of meetings, including the ASEAN Summit in 2026, with various agencies collaborating to ensure successful hosting of the events.
