Legazpi city: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday reported heightened activity at Mayon Volcano, recording 222 volcanic earthquakes, 317 rockfall events, and 63 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally known as 'uson,' over the past 24 hours.
According to Philippines News Agency, lava dome and lava flow effusion accompanied by minor strombolian activity were also observed. Sulfur dioxide emissions reached 1,281 tons per day based on data gathered Wednesday, while ground deformation or swelling was detected at the summit crater.
Access remains strictly prohibited within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone due to the risk of sudden rockfalls, lava flows, lava fountaining, and rain-induced lahars. Authorities advised local governments and communities around Mayon to stay vigilant and heed all warnings amidst increased volcanic activity.
Significant rockfalls and PDCs were seen descending the Mi-isi, Bonga, and Basud gullies. Mayon remains under Alert Level 3. Meanwhile, the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) warned residents that ashfall has reached Legazpi City and nearby towns.
APSEMO chief Roderick Mendoza said Amihan winds are carrying ash toward Legazpi, Daraga, Camalig, and Guinobatan, while earlier plumes may have affected Bacacay and upper Tabaco. Residents were advised to wear N95 masks or damp cloths, protect their eyes, seal food and water, and closely monitor official advisories for sudden changes in wind direction.
