Puerto princesa city: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has directed all police commanders to strengthen supervision of their personnel, particularly in operations, to prevent incidents that could lead to legal issues and loss of life. The order follows a recent shootout in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, which resulted in the deaths of two police officers and a Bureau of Corrections officer.

According to Philippines News Agency, the shootout stemmed from a request for police assistance following a mauling incident at a wake, where some intoxicated attendees attacked two individuals. In a statement Tuesday, Nartatez emphasized that proper supervision ensures discipline and improves operational outcomes in line with peace and order policies.

"Command responsibility applies to all levels - no ifs, ands or buts. Either you show what leadership means, or give way to those who can do it," Nartatez said. He warned that lapses in supervision would be dealt with under existing PNP rules, in line with directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to uphold discipline and professionalism in the police force.

Following the Palawan incident, the Puerto Princesa City police director and the Palawan provincial police director were relieved from their posts. Nartatez stressed that strict adherence to command responsibility can prevent legal troubles and serious incidents, noting that past cases have seen police officers face criminal and administrative charges due to failure to follow operational procedures.

He added that effective supervision is central to the Enhanced Managing Police Operations framework, which supports gains in crime prevention and response. While policies are already in place, Nartatez said the key is ensuring these are properly implemented at the ground level.

"Proper guidance of our personnel is essential as we push to maintain discipline and push for integrity and professionalism in the police organization. Let us work together in achieving that," he said.
