Manila: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Sunday urged the public to remain calm and refrain from engaging in speculations as he assured the public of a fair and comprehensive investigation into the Senate gunfire incident.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez issued a statement as social media and other platforms are flooded with theories and speculations about the incident on May 13. The PNP chief emphasized the importance of basing conclusions on facts and evidence to uncover the truth about the incident. He reassured the public that the investigation is being conducted with a focus on truth, accountability, and justice.
The incident involved Mao Aplasca, acting chief of the Office of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms (OSAA), who admitted to firing a warning shot after encountering armed individuals within Senate jurisdiction. The individuals were later identified as personnel from the National Bureau of Investigation. Aplasca stated that OSAA personnel initially challenged the armed individuals, requesting them to identify themselves and lower their firearms, but they did not comply.
Police personnel were already present at the Senate premises during the incident. Nartatez, who visited the Senate following the gunfire to ensure the safety of senators, reported that significant pieces of evidence and testimonies have been gathered, potentially clarifying the event. The investigation includes the arrest of one suspect and the acquisition of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
Nartatez noted that government agencies have been cooperative throughout the investigation process. He highlighted the urgency of providing the public with clear answers based on factual and meticulous investigation. He reiterated the PNP's commitment to releasing the investigation findings as promptly as possible, emphasizing that the Filipino people deserve to know the truth.
