Manila: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has initiated a thorough review of cases involving minors who have violated laws, including significant school-related offenses, as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the country's juvenile justice system.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gen. Nartatez highlighted the PNP's role as a key agency with extensive records on minors involved in legal infractions. The review aims to identify which measures are effective and which require improvement to achieve the objectives of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare system.

Gen. Nartatez emphasized the importance of understanding the intent behind the juvenile justice and welfare law, which focuses on reform and rehabilitation to aid young offenders in becoming productive citizens. He stated that as a frontline agency in dealing with juveniles in conflict with the law, the PNP is committed to developing a more effective policing approach that accommodates the dynamic nature of youth and modern society.

The PNP is actively coordinating with the Department of Education (DepEd) to formulate policies ensuring the safety and well-being of students. One such collaborative effort is the implementation of active shooter drills in schools nationwide. The PNP also supports DepEd's guidance counseling programs for juvenile offenders, working alongside the police's Women and Children Protection Desk.

Gen. Nartatez reiterated that the PNP's mission extends beyond law enforcement and crime prevention, aspiring to contribute to a holistic approach that ensures community safety and improvement.
