Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its cyber monitoring efforts to protect minors from violent extremism propagated by transnational online groups. This initiative comes in the wake of revelations that two minors involved in a gun attack in Tacloban City may have been influenced by the "764 Network," a group identified as violent extremists.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. emphasized the organization's commitment to safeguarding not just the physical environment but also the digital space. In a statement released on Thursday, Nartatez highlighted the importance of cyberspace monitoring and cyber patrolling as part of the PNP's comprehensive approach to law enforcement.
The PNP's actions align with concerns raised by Senator Risa Hontiveros, who pointed out the alleged involvement of an "adult groomer" in relation to the minor suspects and their connection to the "764 Network." Nartatez assured that the PNP would collaborate with international law enforcement agencies to assess the group's operations and identify those responsible.
This initiative is part of a broader directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., guided by Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to conduct a thorough investigation into the Tacloban shooting and ascertain any connections to organized criminal or extremist groups.
The two minors implicated in the incident are currently under the care of the Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth. The PNP's investigation will also explore the potential involvement of Filipinos in the 764 Network's activities and whether other minors have been targeted by the group. Nartatez reiterated the PNP's dedication to uncovering any local connections to this network and identifying their intended victims.
