PNP Intensifies Post-Disaster Recovery Efforts in Cyclone-Affected Areas

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) stepped up its post-disaster recovery efforts in the aftermath of tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay, and the enhanced southwest monsoon or "habagat". In a statement Wednesday, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units in calamity-affected areas were directed to maintain heightened visibility and work closely with local governments as they begin restoring normal community activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP reported 26 deaths from weather-related incidents as of Tuesday afternoon, which include 25 civilians and one police officer. 'Our responsibility does not end with search and rescue operations. We will remain engaged in the recovery phase by maintaining security, supporting relief efforts, and helping communities recover from the effects of the disaster,' Nartatez said, adding this is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure sustained government assistance and security for communities affected by disasters as they move from emergency response toward rehabilitation and recovery.

Nartatez said police presence would remain in affected communities as local governments move evacuees toward a safe return and resume essential services. 'The PNP will continue to work closely with local governments and other agencies to restore peace and order, secure affected communities, assist in relief and recovery operations, and ensure that our people can safely return to their homes,' he said. Nartatez also directed local police commanders to coordinate with local government units on the safe return of evacuees and the restoration of normal community activities.

Police units were likewise tasked to maintain security and visibility during the transition from emergency response to recovery.
