Manila: While no major security threat has been detected yet, Philippine National Police (PNP) acting chief Lt. Gen Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured the public that the PNP will remain on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents during the holiday season.

According to Philippines News Agency, police units across the country have been instructed to strengthen their presence in public areas, major thoroughfares, and key venues where holiday events and gatherings are expected. This precaution comes in light of the fatal shooting incident at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, which resulted in the deaths of at least 16 individuals.

Lt. Gen Nartatez emphasized, "The PNP is maintaining heightened vigilance to deter provocateurs and prevent any security threat." He further stated that commanders have been directed to deploy a sufficient number of personnel to ensure visible police presence in crowded areas, aiming to provide security reassurance to the public while discouraging potential troublemakers.

This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to secure communities during the festive season and maintain peace and order, particularly in areas where large crowds gather for celebrations.

The Department of Migrant Workers has reported that, so far, no Filipinos have been affected by the recent shooting incident abroad. Locally, Nartatez assured the public that the PNP remains prepared to respond swiftly to any emergency, stating, "Walang pagbabanta sa seguridad na aming namomonitor pero makakaasa ang publiko na naka-alerto ang kapulisan upang masiguro ang kaligtasan ng bawat isa."

Earlier, the PNP announced that over 100,000 personnel would be deployed nationwide to secure the Christmas and New Year holidays. This marks a significant increase from last year's deployment of 60,000 personnel.
