Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP), through its Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), has rescued 18 minors in a series of operations targeting harmful online activities from Jan. 1 to April 30.
According to Philippines News Agency, the operations stemmed from intelligence information received by the ACG, an active member of the Anti-Terrorism Fusion Group, regarding online users engaged in harmful discussions and self-harm themes associated with violent extremist content.
Acting on the information gathered, cyber investigators conducted online monitoring and case build-up operations that led to 12 focused rescue operations in various areas nationwide. Authorities discovered that some minors were being exposed to harmful online communities and virtual platforms that promoted violence, self-destruction, and dangerous behavior.
Investigators also monitored alarming online conversations involving violent imagery and harmful content, prompting immediate intervention to protect the minors involved. In coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), local police units, and concerned families, the rescued minors were referred for appropriate psychosocial support, counseling, and other protective interventions to help ensure their recovery and well-being.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized the important role of families and communities in safeguarding children from harmful online influences. "Hinahikayat namin ang mga magulang at guardians na maging mas mapagmatyag at aktibong makibahagi sa online activities at social interactions ng kanilang mga anak. Ang maagang paggabay, bukas na komunikasyon, at tamang suporta ay mahalaga upang maprotektahan sila laban sa harmful online influences (We encourage parents and guardians to be more vigilant and actively participate in their children's online activities and social interactions. Early guidance, open communication, and the right support are essential to protect them against harmful online influences)," Nartatez said in a statement.
The ACG assured the public that it will continue working closely with local and international partners to monitor online threats while promoting responsible digital citizenship and youth protection.
