Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has directed regional directors and police commanders to strengthen coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in intensifying operations against illegal logging and mining. The initiative comes in the wake of recent arrests and aims to bolster environmental protection efforts across the country.
According to Philippines News Agency, three individuals were recently arrested for illegal mining activities that caused environmental degradation in Barangay Bahi, Barobo, Surigao del Sur. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that protecting forests requires close collaboration among government agencies and local communities, a directive supported by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Gen. Nartatez stated that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of the DENR. It requires strong coordination among government agencies and alliances with local communities, all of which should be built on trust and commitment to safeguard their surroundings. He highlighted the recent arrests as evidence of effective collaboration and expressed the intention to continue this approach.
During the operation, authorities seized PHP5 million worth of equipment from the suspects, including water pumps and a backhoe. The apprehended individuals are currently detained at the Barobo Municipal Police Station and face charges for violating the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.
