Poe Highlights Print Media’s Role in Combating Fake News Surge

Manila: Senator Grace Poe on Thursday emphasized the critical role of print media in the fight against the proliferation of fake news, describing it as a "bastion of accountability and responsibility" in today's fast-paced digital environment.

According to Philippines News Agency, Poe, in a news release, underscored how traditional print journalism maintains ethical standards, particularly in fact-checking, while social media prioritizes speed and virality. She stated, "Print remains essential in media today because it is seen as a bastion of accountability and responsibility. Print media is trusted and can confidently brand itself as a guardian of truth."

Poe highlighted the resilience of print and broadcast outlets against accusations of misinformation, in contrast to the more vulnerable digital news platforms and social media. Despite acknowledging the significant influence of digital platforms like Facebook and TikTok in shaping public opinion and possibly influencing elections, Poe stressed the importance of maintaining accurate information for a democratic society. "What happens in the digital world affects those in the non-digital arena. Freedom of information and access to accurate and correct information are vital to a democratic state such as ours," she stated.

Poe pointed out that while social media platforms serve as vehicles for content distribution, the onus of accuracy remains with content creators, whether they be journalists, bloggers, or ordinary citizens. She referenced a 2023 global study by research firm Toluna, commissioned by advocacy group Two Sides, which found that 71 percent of respondents believed that reading printed materials provided a deeper understanding of stories.

Poe proposed that print and digital media could complement each other, rather than being mutually exclusive. She suggested that the strengths of print media, such as depth, thoroughness, and trust, could be combined with the speed and wide reach of social media. She concluded by suggesting that finding the right balance and integration of both platforms should be entrusted to "competent minds."

In a related move, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has tasked the Presidential Communications Office with aiding the government in its efforts to combat fake news.
