Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) is preparing for potential protests on March 11, marking one year since the arrest, transfer, and detention of former president Rodrigo Duterte in The Hague.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has reported that social media monitoring has identified posts calling for a substantial motorcade rally. The proposed route is said to extend along EDSA, concluding at Villamor Air Base, to commemorate Duterte's first year in international custody on charges of crimes against humanity.

Gen. Nartatez emphasized the PNP's commitment to public safety, stating, "We are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local units to ensure public safety." He acknowledged the right to peaceful assembly while underscoring the PNP's responsibility to prevent disruptions to normal activities and maintain peace and order.

In preparation for the anticipated rallies, Nartatez has directed increased police deployment in Metro Manila and Davao City, areas significant to Duterte's political influence. He also urged law enforcement to practice maximum tolerance, adhere to the rule of law, and called on protest participants to exercise discipline and follow instructions from authorities.

"We respect your right to protest but I remind everyone to exercise discipline and comply with authorities' directions to prevent unnecessary conflicts," Nartatez reiterated, aiming to ensure the demonstrations remain peaceful and orderly.
