Manila: The Senate on Monday approved five significant measures, including a bill that abolishes the Optical Media Board (OMB) and transfers its powers and functions to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). Senate Bill No. 1654, which received unanimous support with 20 affirmative votes, aims to update government structures to reflect the transition from disc-based media to digital platforms.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senator Robinhood Padilla, the sponsor of the measure, emphasized the need to align institutions with current technological realities, as traditional forms of media consumption have shifted to digital and streaming platforms. The bill ensures the protection of OMB employees by mandating their transfer to IPOPHL.

The Senate also approved Senate Bill No. 1744, known as the proposed Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This bill seeks to regulate debt collection activities, offering protection to borrowers from harassment and unfair practices. Senator Sherwin Gatchalian highlighted the bill's importance in defending the rights of ordinary citizens against abusive debt collection, emphasizing the need for proper and humane methods.

In addition, Senate Bill No. 1822 was passed, institutionalizing a national plan of action for persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Senator Joel Villanueva underscored the impact of this measure in improving access to diagnosis, treatment, and support services for individuals with ASD.

Further, Senate Bill No. 1899 grants the Department of Education flexibility in choosing pedagogical approaches for the basic education curriculum under the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. Another measure, Senate Bill No. 1743, amends the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, updating benefits and incentives for Filipino athletes and their coaches participating in international competitions.
