Pope Leo Meets Abbas, Reiterates Call for Two-State Solution

Vatican city: Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Vatican's support for a two-State solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Apostolic Palace on Thursday, the Holy See announced.

According to Philippines News Agency, during the cordial talks, it was recognized that there is an urgent need to provide assistance to the civilian population in Gaza and to end the conflict by pursuing a two-State solution, the Vatican said in a statement.

The meeting coincided with the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine, which formalized diplomatic relations between the two entities.

Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, is in Rome for an official visit and is scheduled to meet Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni on Friday.

His trip comes nearly a month after a ceasefire took effect in the Gaza Strip.

Upon his arrival in the Italian capital on Wednesday, Abbas visited the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he paid his respects at the tomb of Pope Francis.
