President Marcos Endorses DOST’s Initiative on Local Agri-Machinery Production.

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has given his approval to the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) initiative aimed at boosting the agricultural sector through the development and utilization of locally-manufactured machinery. During a sectoral meeting held in Malacañang, Marcos expressed his optimism about the DOST's "Local Manufacturing Capabilities to Support Agri-Mechanization" program. According to Philippines News Agency, the President emphasized the cost-effectiveness of locally-produced machinery compared to imported alternatives. He noted that some of these machines have already been distributed to farmers as part of the government's support and service initiatives. Marcos highlighted the presence of locally-produced towed machines used for harvesting and tilling, which have been evident in recent distributions. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. pointed out that transitioning from importing to locally producing machinery would not only benefit agriculture but also bolster the man ufacturing industry. He underscored that mechanization is crucial for enhancing efficiency and reducing costs in farming, a need recognized by the Department of Agriculture (DA). The DA has been supplying farm implements through the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund, which aligns with this initiative. Solidum added that strengthening the agri-machinery sector is vital for improving farming practices, increasing productivity, and creating employment opportunities. Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. also supported the DOST's program, stressing the importance of focusing on machinery that meets the needs and quality standards of local farmers. In response, President Marcos directed the DOST, DA, and other research institutes to prioritize research and development in the agri-mechanization effort to ensure its successful implementation.
