Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed his gratitude to first responders and local government units for their tireless efforts in managing the aftermath of consecutive typhoons that have affected various parts of the Philippines in recent weeks. In a media interview, President Marcos reported a fatality in Camarines Norte due to the onslaught of Super Typhoon Pepito, also known internationally as Man-Yi. According to Philippines News Agency, the President emphasized the gravity of even a single casualty, stating, "One casualty is one casualty too many." He extended his appreciation to those who worked to ensure public safety amid the typhoon's destruction, noting that Pepito's impact was not as severe as initially feared. President Marcos acknowledged the exhaustion faced by responders but commended their continued dedication and efforts. Additionally, President Marcos expressed gratitude to the public for cooperating with government alerts and following safety protocols. He reassured affected communities that relief and recovery operations will persist, emphasizing efforts to rescue isolated areas and provide aid to displaced individuals lacking basic necessities such as food and water. The President also mentioned plans to commence rebuilding efforts. President Marcos called on Filipinos to embody the spirit of Christmas by assisting those affected by the typhoons, urging generosity during the holiday season. He highlighted the importance of community support for those enduring hardships. Typhoon Pepito, the sixth tropical cyclone to impact the Philippines in a month, brought heavy rains and strong winds to Luzon and parts of the Visayas, causing flooding, particularly in the Bicol Region, previously hit by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine in late October. After making landfall over Aurora province, Pepito weakened as it moved over the West Philippine Sea. In Catanduanes, the Diocese of Virac has issued an appeal for assistance for residents severely impacted by Pepito. They are request ing donations of non-perishable food items, hygiene products, clothing, and blankets. Donations can be delivered to designated locations in Virac, Catanduanes, or financial contributions can be made to specified accounts.
