PRO-NIR Mourns Loss of Another Cop in Anti-Drug Operation

La castellana: The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) mourned the death of M/Sgt. Davy Carampatana, who was fatally stabbed by a drug suspect during a buy-bust in La Castellana, Negros Occidental Monday night. Carampatana, 38, is the second police officer in the region killed by the subject of an illegal drug operation this year, after M/Sgt. Romulo Galvez Jr., 43, who was shot during an operation in Bacolod City on April 10.

According to Philippines News Agency, PRO-NIR acting director Brig. Gen. Romano Cardi±o led the region's police force in extending condolences to the family of the fallen police officer. "We mourn the untimely death of M/Sgt. Davy Carampatana who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. For me he is a hero, his courage and dedication in the service of the people will never be forgotten," Cardi±o said in a statement on Tuesday.

In a Facebook post, the PRO-NIR honored Carampatana, who rendered service in the Philippine National Police for 16 years, for a life 'lived with purpose, integrity and sacrifice.' Carampatana's superior, deputy police chief Capt. Michael Mu±ez, was injured and treated at The Doctors' Hospital here, while his other colleague, Cpl. Gerson Guache, sustained slight injuries.

On Tuesday, Cardi±o visited Mu±ez at the hospital and conferred him the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting in recognition of the police officer's courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to public service despite the dangers faced in the performance of duty.

In a report, the PRO-NIR said primary suspect Edward Acupan, 41, resisted arrest and attacked the operatives using a double-bladed weapon. His 68-year-old mother, Delia, also stabbed the operating personnel. Acupan, who was injured, was brought to the La Castellana Rural Health Unit while Delia is detained at the police station.

Operatives recovered from the suspect's possession several sachets of shabu with a street value of PHP47,600 as well as the buy-bust money, drug paraphernalia, and bladed weapons used during the attack.
