Profit-taking Leads to Decline in Philippine Stock Exchange Index and Peso

Manila: After a three-day rise, the Philippine Stock Exchange index reversed its path Monday due to profit-taking, and the local currency shed against the greenback.

According to Philippines News Agency, the local bourse's main index went down by 1.78 percent to 6,000.32 points, and the broader All Shares by 1.14 percent to 3,643.95 points. Only the Mining and Oil index gained during the day after it rose 2.61 percent. Holding Firms posted the biggest drop at 2.02 percent and was trailed by Financials, 1.98 percent; Industrial, 1.64 percent; Property, 1.43 percent; and Services, 0.78 percent.

Volume reached 2.07 billion shares, amounting to PHP12.12 billion. Decliners led advancers at 139 to 64, while 58 shares were unchanged. "Investors remain cautious ahead of the inflation rate release tomorrow, which could influence the BSP's (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) next policy move," Luis Limlingan, Regina Capital Development Corporation head of sales, said.

This development affected the foreign exchange trading, with the peso depreciating to 58.35 against the US dollar from its 57.87 close last Friday. It opened the day at 58.05, sideways from the previous session's level, and traded between 58.36 and 58.04. The average for the day stood at 58.15. Volume reached nearly USD1.2 billion, lower than the USD1.62 billion at the end of last week.
