The Hague: Prosecutors have formally urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to reject former president Rodrigo Duterte's request for interim release. In an official 15-page filing dated June 23, Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang addressed the ICC chamber, arguing against the release of Duterte to any country willing to accept him.
According to Philippines News Agency, the prosecution emphasized the necessity of Duterte's continued detention to ensure his appearance at trial. The prosecution's position is also anchored in preventing Duterte from obstructing or endangering the investigation or court proceedings and in preventing any further crimes under the Court's jurisdiction. The document highlighted concerns regarding Duterte's potential influence on the proceedings and his past statements.
The prosecution referenced Duterte's family's plans to bring him back to the Philippines. Despite the defense's assertion that Duterte would not commit further crimes if released, the prosecution pointed to Duterte's past remarks about running for Mayor of Davao City again in 2025 and his pledge to 'double' the killings upon his return. Duterte's victory in the Davao Mayoral election and his family's intentions to repatriate him to the Philippines were also noted.
Furthermore, the prosecution highlighted Duterte and his associates' history of interfering with investigations against him. They recalled instances where Duterte threatened to shoot ICC officials if they attempted to arrest him. Duterte remains in ICC custody, facing charges related to his administration's war on drugs.
