PSA Encourages Public to Utilize Free Services During Civil Registration Month

Dumaguete: The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Negros Oriental is urging the public to take advantage of complimentary services provided by local government units (LGU) as part of the 35th Civil Registration Month celebration this February.

According to Philippines News Agency, Engineer Ariel Fortuito, chief statistical specialist and PSA-Negros Oriental head, shared in an interview that the LGUs typically cover the costs for various documents, such as certificates of no marriage record, birth registration, and marriage certificates. Fortuito emphasized that all LGUs are required to participate in Civil Registration Month, and the PSA is often invited to participate in events like mass weddings and birth registrations.

Fortuito noted that most LGUs waive their fees for late registration applicants and those seeking a negative certification from the PSA. A negative certification is a document issued by the PSA indicating that no records exist for a requested document, such as birth, death, or marriage records, anywhere in the Philippines.

Additionally, some LGUs organize celebratory events, including providing lechon and a simple feast for newly-wed couples during mass weddings. The local Civil Registrar's Office is available to assist with registration applications, ensuring that all necessary processes are completed smoothly.

The PSA is also incorporating the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) registration for a national ID as part of this year's activities. The theme for this year's celebration is "Building a Resilient, Agile, and Future Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System."
