Manila: The local shares improved on Monday breaching the 6,400-mark, while peso ended the day weaker. The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) rose 0.46 percent to 6,406.13, with All Shares also increasing by 0.19 percent to 3,786.59 level.
According to Philippines News Agency, sectoral indices were mixed, with winners Holding Firms and Services both increased their counters by 1.15 percent to 5,501.58 and 2,229.22 points, respectively, while Financials went up by 0.61 percent to 2,364.09. Losers for the day include Mining and Oil, declining by 3.70 percent to 9,523.15; followed by Property, down by 0.81 percent to 2,270.76; and Industrial, down by 0.44 percent to 8,914.
Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. chief economist Michael Ricafort said the local bourse's closing on Monday was among three-week highs and also near 10-month highs or since Jan. 10, 2025. The improvement also came after Japan Credit Rating Agency affirmed its A- credit rating with a stable outlook for the Philippines and higher gross international reserves (GIR) of USD105.5 billion as of May 2025.
Decliners outpaced advancers at 117 to 85, with 50 counters left unchanged. Meanwhile, the peso closed weaker at 55.81 to the US dollar from Thursday's finish of 55.62. The local currency opened the day at 55.85 to the dollar before trading between a low of 55.78 and a high of 55.88. The average level for the day stood at 55.82 to the greenback. Trade volume dropped to USD767.8 million on Monday from last week's volume of USD1.77 billion.
