Zamboanga city: Criminal charges have been filed against a school security personnel and the father of the student involved in the fatal August 18 shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) Junior High School, as announced by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday. The father, who is a customs police officer, owned the firearms used in the incident, while the security personnel faces charges for lapses in school safety protocol.
According to Philippines News Agency, the shooter killed a Grade 10 student, injured another, and then turned the gun on himself. The PNP, through a statement, clarified that a Police Regional Office 9-led Special Investigation Task Group found no evidence suggesting that the incident was part of a conspiracy involving any group or individual. There were no school-related or personal grievances identified as motives, but prior preparation and exposure to violent online content were noted as contributing factors.
The investigation highlighted deficiencies in firearm safekeeping and school security protocols as key elements that allowed the incident to occur. Consequently, a complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury was filed against the father and the security personnel.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. emphasized the importance of a fair and responsible investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents. He urged firearm owners to secure their weapons diligently and advised schools to review their access controls and screening measures.
Department of Justice Undersecretary Ian Dato confirmed that the Office of the City Prosecutor of Zamboanga City has received a complaint against the shooter's father. He stated that the case would undergo proper evaluation, and fines might be issued to the respondents to allow thorough examination by prosecutors. Dato also acknowledged the unique circumstances of the incident and noted that the National Prosecution Service would act based on evidence and applicable law.
