Regional Offices Authorized to Suspend Classes for Earthquake Preparedness

Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that regional and division offices have been granted the authority to suspend face-to-face classes to ensure school infrastructures are safe and prepared for potential earthquakes and other natural disasters.

According to Philippines News Agency, this decision follows a recent two-day suspension of in-person classes in Metro Manila due to reports of influenza-like illnesses among students and recent seismic activities in various parts of the country. Dennis Legaspi, DepEd Media Relations Chief, emphasized that the suspension is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding learners, educators, and school personnel.

Legaspi explained, "Regional and Schools Division Offices of the DepEd may implement preventive suspensions to conduct structural inspections and other activities to ensure that schools are prepared in the event of strong earthquakes or other calamities." He called for the cooperation of parents, teachers, and local governments to help ensure school safety.

Efforts within the DepEd-NCR have already been initiated, including the cleaning and disinfecting of classrooms and common areas, as well as conducting structural and safety inspections of school buildings and facilities. In addition, preparations are underway for the execution of drills focused on earthquake preparedness and other emergency protocols. Health and safety practices are also being reinforced.

Legaspi assured that alternative delivery modes, such as online distance learning and modular learning, are available to maintain learning continuity for students during these suspensions.
