Baguio: The Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI), the organization responsible for the annual festival and its highlight float parade, is considering implementing an accreditation system for float makers to regulate the industry. Anthony De Leon, chairman of the BFFFI Executive Committee, emphasized the need to address overcharging practices, which discourage participation in the float parade.
According to Philippines News Agency, reports indicate some float makers charge between PHP1.5 million to PHP1.8 million. De Leon revealed that the Baguio Country Club, where he serves as manager, pays approximately PHP500,000 for a large float, covering flowers, labor, materials, and the designer's fee. He criticized the excessive charges, stating, "That is too much. We are not buying a sedan, we are just renting a truck and decorating it with flowers."
The Baguio Country Club has been a participant in the parade since the festival's inception. De Leon expressed concern about the negative impact of overcharging on the float-making industry, acknowledging the uniqueness of the annual event but advocating for reasonable fees.
The proposed accreditation will allow only floats made by accredited float makers to participate, aiming to control the costs for float participants. De Leon mentioned the existence of five professional float makers and plans for a seminar to share expertise with current assistants.
