Manila: Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has announced his intention to apply for the position of Ombudsman, as the current Ombudsman, Samuel Martires, is set to complete his seven-year term on August 6 of this year. Remulla expressed his plans during a chance interview with reporters, stating his intention to submit his application by Friday and expressing confidence in his ability to contribute significantly to the role.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla, who is currently facing a complaint before the anti-graft office from the camp of former President Rodrigo Duterte, mentioned that the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) will be responsible for assessing his suitability for the post. He conveyed his trust in the JBC's ability to evaluate the complaint and his qualifications appropriately. Remulla emphasized that he would need to discuss his candidacy with the JBC, as they are best positioned to appreciate his potential contributions as Ombudsman.
Furthermore, Remulla indicated that he foresees no issues regarding the appointment of his successor at the Department of Justice should he be appointed as Ombudsman. He expressed confidence in the department's organizational strength, stating that it could continue to function effectively in his absence if the succession process is handled properly.
The Ombudsman plays a crucial role in the Philippine government, tasked with investigating and prosecuting government officials accused of crimes such as graft and corruption. The position is appointed by the President of the Philippines based on a list provided by the JBC and is held for a nonrenewable seven-year term. Removal from office is only possible through impeachment.
