Manila: The number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) repatriated by the Philippine government has reached nearly 10,000 after bringing home 323 more workers on board a Kuwait Airways flight amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. This effort underscores the government's commitment to supporting its nationals abroad.
According to Philippines News Agency, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Patricia Yvonne 'PY' Caunan accompanied the latest batch of OFWs from Kuwait as part of the government's continuous repatriation program. Caunan detailed the logistics of the operation, noting a special flight arranged with Kuwait Airways to ease the travel burdens of OFWs who had previously endured extended land journeys.
Cacdac highlighted the impact of the repatriation efforts, stating that the total now stands at 9,696, with additional arrivals expected to push the figure beyond 10,000. The government has facilitated these returns through both chartered and commercial flights, ensuring that affected workers receive necessary support.
Caunan and Cacdac traveled to Kuwait on May 12 to engage with Filipino community leaders and assess the repatriation operations. The government has also provided financial assistance to 25,246 affected workers, a portion of whom remain in the Middle East. Those opting against repatriation received USD200 in aid, while returning workers were granted additional financial support.
The OWWA has augmented this aid with PHP10,000 in financial assistance, along with accommodations and transport for workers returning to their provinces. Active OWWA members are eligible for livelihood assistance through the 'Balik-Pinas, Balik-Hanapbuhay' program, which offers initial capital for business or job hunting.
Cacdac emphasized the government's broader support initiatives, including job facilitation, livelihood programs, and skills training in collaboration with various agencies. An estimated 200,000 local job orders have been identified to match the profiles of returning OFWs. The government is working with multiple departments to provide comprehensive employment and retraining opportunities.
During their Kuwait visit, Cacdac and Caunan conducted site visits to engage with Filipino workers in healthcare and construction sectors, ensuring their well-being and addressing any concerns. The government remains committed to providing immediate assistance and long-term reintegration support for returning OFWs, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directives.
