Reported Deaths from Cyclones, ‘Habagat’ Now at 34

Manila: The reported death toll from the combined effects of heavy southwest monsoon (habagat) rains and a succession of tropical cyclones has risen to 34, according to the latest tally by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as of Tuesday morning.

According to Philippines News Agency, only two of these fatalities have been confirmed - one in Northern Mindanao and another in the Caraga Region - while the remaining 32 deaths are still under verification by the NDRRMC. The breakdown of these unverified fatalities includes nine from the National Capital Region, eight from Calabarzon, six from Western Visayas, three from the Negros Island Region, two each from Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao, and one each from Mimaropa and the Davao Region.

The NDRRMC also reported that 18 individuals sustained injuries, with 11 cases still undergoing confirmation. Additionally, seven individuals have been reported missing, three of whom have been confirmed. The inclement weather has affected 1,857,171 families, translating to approximately 6,670,506 individuals residing in 7,143 barangays across the nation.

As of the latest report, 33,694 families are being assisted in 1,199 evacuation centers, while 21,299 families are receiving aid outside these facilities. The monsoon rains, along with cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong, have caused damage to 15,220 houses, with 13,554 classified as "partially damaged" and 1,666 as "totally damaged."

The financial impact of the weather events is considerable, with damage to agriculture estimated at PHP1.68 billion and infrastructure damages reaching PHP7.36 billion.
