Rescued Philippine Serpent Eagle Handed Over to DENR Bicol for Rehabilitation

Donsol: A Philippine serpent eagle (Spilornis holospilus) found in a barangay in Donsol, Sorsogon, was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Bicol (DENR-5) on Monday. The eagle, appearing weak and dehydrated, was initially rescued in Barangay Dancalan in Donsol.

According to Philippines News Agency, Francisco Milla, DENR Bicol Regional Executive Director, stated that a concerned citizen, Lalaine Herrera Amor, cared for the eagle for about three weeks. Amor noted that after its recovery and release into the wild, the eagle returned multiple times, prompting her to contact DENR for appropriate handling and rehabilitation.

DENR Bicol arranged for the eagle's transport to Albay Park and Wildlife for further assessment and care, aiming for its eventual release back to its natural habitat. Milla emphasized the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation, urging the public to report similar incidents to the authorities.

The Philippine serpent eagle, native to the Philippines, typically inhabits riparian forests, foothills, cultivated lands, and forest edges. It is categorized under 'Other Wildlife Species' as per Section 4 of DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09 and classified as 'Least Concern' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Despite this, its population trend is decreasing, highlighting the need for continued conservation efforts.
