Rising Boxing Star Carl Jammes Martin Triumphant in US Debut

Las Vegas: Rising Filipino boxing star Carl Jammes Martin impressed in his United States debut, defeating Mexican Francisco Pedroza Portillo via unanimous decision in their eight-rounder junior featherweight bout on Sunday (PH time) at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to Philippines News Agency, the 26-year-old Martin dictated the pace early, using his jab and footwork that disrupted the Mexican's rhythm. In round 6, Martin, currently the World Boxing Organization No. 2 junior featherweight, landed a big counter right hook that sent Portillo to the canvas. The Mexican, however, managed to beat the count and continue the fight.

Portillo continued to push forward with the sense of urgency in the last two rounds but the Lagawe, Ifugao native showed composure until the final bell. With the win, the 'Wonderboy' remained undefeated at 26-0 (20 KOs) while Portillo slid to 19-13-2 (11 KOs).

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, in Las Vegas to promote his July 19 comeback bout against Mario Barrios, visited the locker room to personally congratulate Martin.
