Manila: Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and several lawmakers of the House of Representatives have vehemently denied the allegations made by contractors Pacifico Discaya and Cezarah Discaya during a Senate hearing on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Romualdez issued a strong statement rejecting the claims made in the Discaya couple's affidavit, which suggested that his name was used for obtaining commissions. He labeled these accusations as false and malicious, emphasizing that Congress only has the authority to approve the budget, with no involvement in fund releases or project implementations by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Romualdez warned that anyone using his name for personal gain did so without his consent and should face consequences. He affirmed his integrity and commitment to transparency, stating, "I have never, and I will never, accept a bribe from anybody. I have been blessed with the trust of the Filipino people. I do not need -- and will never allow myself -- to be corrupted by money that does not belong to me."
He further pledged accountability for anyone exploiting his name and assured that under his leadership, efforts would be made to cleanse the system, punish wrongdoers, and safeguard public funds.
Other lawmakers also dismissed the Discaya couple's accusations. Pasig City Representative Roman Romulo refuted the allegations linking him to corrupt bidding processes, describing them as attempts to divert attention. He stated, "I was never involved in any bidding nor in selecting contractors for DPWH projects."
Quezon City 1st District Representative Juan Carlos Atayde, who was also implicated alongside his father, businessman Art Atayde, categorically denied benefiting from any contractor. He emphasized his commitment to legal remedies to protect his reputation and hold those spreading falsehoods accountable.
Marikina City 1st District Representative Marcelino Teodoro, who was implicated after exposing double funding in DPWH projects, condemned the allegations as diversionary tactics. He stated, "There is no truth to the allegations by the Discayas. This is just a demolition job -- a cheap shot to ruin me." Teodoro, who was not a congressman at the time of the alleged projects, is considering legal action against the Discayas.
Former lawmaker and current Mayor of San Jose del Monte, Florida Robes, also refuted the claims, highlighting the progress and quality of infrastructure in her city. She announced her intention to file a libel case against Pacifico Discaya for the unfounded allegations.
