Anchorage: The European Union (EU) foreign policy chief on Saturday emphasized that despite US President Donald Trump's efforts to secure a peace deal, Russia remains unwavering in its continuation of the war in Ukraine. "President Trump's resolve to get a peace deal is vital," stated Kaja Kallas on the US social media platform X. She revealed that the EU and its European partners coordinated with President Trump ahead of the Alaska meeting, but noted that Russia shows "no intention of ending this war anytime soon."
According to Philippines News Agency, Kallas highlighted that Moscow intensified its attacks even as delegations assembled. She criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for extending negotiations without making any commitments to cease the conflict. "Putin continues to drag out negotiations and hopes he gets away with it. He left Anchorage without making any commitments to end the killing," Kallas commented. She asserted the power of the US in compelling Russia to engage in serious negotiations and affirmed that the EU will collaborate with Ukraine and the US to ensure Russia's aggression does not succeed and that any peace achieved is sustainable.
The EU foreign policy chief reiterated Europe's commitment to supporting Kyiv, emphasizing that Moscow will not cease its aggression until it realizes it cannot persist in its current course. She disclosed that Europe will continue its support for Ukraine, including efforts towards implementing a 19th Russian sanctions package. Kallas firmly stated that European security is "not up for negotiation," attributing the war's root cause to Russia's imperialist foreign policy rather than any purported imbalance in European security architecture.
Despite the tense circumstances, both Trump and Putin expressed optimism following their extensive closed-door discussions, with Putin indicating they had reached an "understanding." Trump noted that the responsibility now lies with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders to finalize the peace process. "A lot of points were agreed on, there's not that much, you know, one or two pretty significant items, but I think they can be reached," Trump remarked during a Fox News interview post his significant meeting with Putin in Alaska. He emphasized the critical role of President Zelenskyy and suggested greater involvement from European nations in the peace process.
