Safety Measures Implemented for Indigenous Peoples Games-Mindanao After Earthquakes

Buenavista: Despite the twin strong earthquakes on Friday, the Indigenous Peoples Games - Mindanao Leg commenced on Saturday morning in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte. Thirty delegates from different towns in the province convened at Buenavista Central Elementary School grounds for the opening ceremony. The participants are from the three main tribes of Agusan del Norte -- Higaonon, Manobo, and Mamanwa.

According to Philippines News Agency, precautionary measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and stakeholders of the IP Games - Mindanao Leg. This announcement came from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) in the province. The use of the gymnasium has been temporarily suspended as part of the safety protocols. Agusan del Norte experienced an Intensity IV (moderately strong) impact during the magnitude 7.4 quake in Manay, Davao Oriental on Friday morning.

Agusan del Norte Governor Maria Angelica Rosedell Amante, Buenavista Mayor Joselito Roble, Philippine Sports Commission Executive Assistant Joselito Cinco, NCIP Provincial Officer Cierona Cutar, and Provincial IP Mandatory Representative Hawudon Armando Una formally opened the games. Cinco stated, "The event aims to promote and celebrate our IP culture through their traditional games," during an interview on Saturday. He explained that the Philippine Sports Commission has been organizing the IP Games since 2018 to showcase and preserve traditional sports and games in the country.

The most popular Indigenous Peoples games in the country include pana (arrow), kadang-kadang (bamboo stilts race), trumpo (spinning top), and sibat (bow). Other events in Agusan del Norte are Pintik, Bangkaw, Bag-ud, Sudsu, Takyang, Indigenous Race, Tug of War, Fire Making, Lubok-Humay, and Unahik/Palosebo/katkat Kawayan.
