Manila: Malaca±ang on Wednesday announced that it will defer to the Senate regarding the decision on whether Vice President Sara Duterte should testify in her impeachment trial, including any potential move by the prosecution to subpoena her.

According to Philippines News Agency, the impeachment trial entered its 23rd day on Tuesday, with the prosecution stating that it has finalized the presentation of its evidence related to the Vice President's alleged misuse of confidential funds. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that the executive branch would refrain from commenting on the prosecution's strategy or the defense's approach. She highlighted that the Senate has the authority to evaluate the proceedings and make decisions on the matters at hand.

In a Palace briefing, Castro mentioned that the impeachment issue has not been a focal point of discussion for the President, although he is kept informed about the national events. She further explained that the Palace would leave any decision concerning a subpoena for Duterte to the discretion of the Senate following the presentation of the four impeachment articles.

Castro noted that the prosecution might be interested in Duterte's testimony due to her previous willingness to address the allegations against her. However, she reiterated that the timing and decision for her appearance before the impeachment court remain in the hands of the Senate.

When questioned about the likelihood of Duterte attending if summoned, Castro chose not to speculate on the matter.
