Manila: The Senate should focus on its role as an impeachment court rather than reviving parallel inquiries that could divert attention from the trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte, according to Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre. Acidre emphasized that accountability should proceed through the proper forum, as cases have already been filed and the Ombudsman process is underway.

According to Philippines News Agency, Acidre, who chairs the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education, made this appeal in response to discussions about reviving Senate hearings on the flood-control controversy. He asserted that the Ombudsman should be allowed to continue its investigation, as the appropriate forum for these matters now lies with the courts following initial investigations.

Acidre highlighted that the Senate is currently dealing with internal tensions ahead of Duterte's impeachment trial. He noted that cases have already been filed against certain individuals involved in the flood-control issue, and urged that the Ombudsman be permitted to carry out its responsibilities without interference. He advocated for upholding the same standard of evidence and due process in both the flood-control allegations and the impeachment case, cautioning against shortcuts driven by political motives.

He further stated that re-opening every controversy in the Senate, especially with the impending impeachment trial, risks scattering the nation's focus. Acidre reminded that accountability should not be subject to shortcuts, as these could serve as distractions and only complicate the issue.

Acidre concluded by urging the Senate to concentrate on its duties as senator-judges, given that the Constitution designates the chamber with the unique power to acquit or convict the Vice President in an impeachment trial.
