Senate Won’t Rush Impeachment, Urges Respect for Legal Process

Manila: Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero on Monday said the Senate would not allow itself to be rushed into convening the impeachment court, underscoring the need to follow due process and give fair notice to all parties. Escudero gave the statement during an interview after leading the unveiling of the Senate Legacy Wall, a mural honoring the senators of the 20th Congress, held at the Senate premises.

According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero mentioned that August 4 is being proposed as the date for the start of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial, but noted that the matter would still be discussed when the session resumes. He emphasized that it is not the Senate's role to hasten the process just because others are in a hurry, and reiterated that the proceedings will adhere to due process.

Escudero highlighted the importance of proper notification for the parties involved and stressed that the House of Representatives must act on the Senate's order in line with the current Congress. He confirmed that any jurisdictional challenges that may arise during the trial will be decided by a vote, which is the chamber's standard practice.

Addressing suggestions for his inhibition from the proceedings, Escudero stated there is no need for such actions. He remarked that fairness should not be equated with siding with a particular group. Additionally, Escudero asserted that only a formal vote can decide the next Senate President amid reports of widespread support for his ongoing leadership.

In a separate issue, Escudero reiterated his stance against online gambling, describing it as a growing issue that takes advantage of Filipinos. He highlighted several bills aimed at banning or regulating Philippine inland gaming, questioning the logic of allowing such activities when similar restrictions apply to foreign gambling operators like POGOs (Philippine offshore gaming operators).
