Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Friday called on retailers and pharmacies to show compassion and solidarity by strictly complying with the Department of Health's (DOH) 60-day price freeze on essential medicines in calamity-hit areas. 'Ang pananamantala sa gitna ng krisis ay hindi makatao. Ito ang panahon para ipakita ang malasakit at pagkakaisa sa kapwa nating Pilipino (Taking advantage of others during a crisis is inhumane. This is the time to show compassion and solidarity with our fellow Filipinos),' Gatchalian said in a statement.
According to Philippines News Agency, the senator emphasized that the DOH's directive is a necessary step to protect vulnerable communities and ensure continued access to life-saving medicines following disasters. 'The price freeze is a necessary and urgent measure to ensure that life-saving treatments remain within reach of our most vulnerable citizens,' he said.
Gatchalian also urged local government units and concerned agencies to intensify monitoring and swiftly address complaints of overpricing or violations of the DOH order. The DOH implemented the price cap after several areas were placed under a state of calamity due to recent typhoons and widespread flooding.
Under the Price Act (Republic Act 7581), a price freeze automatically takes effect in disaster-stricken areas to prevent profiteering and ensure the availability of essential goods.
