Manila: Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros is considering launching an inquiry into the emerging trends of online sexual exploitation of children (OSAEC) and assessing the compliance of internet platforms, e-wallet services, and remittance centers in combating these crimes. This initiative follows the senator's receipt of information regarding a disturbing case involving a 10-month-old infant who was subjected to online sexual abuse and exploitation.
According to Philippines News Agency, Hontiveros expressed the necessity to hold accountable any internet service providers, e-wallets, or remittance centers implicated in the proliferation of OSAEC. She emphasized the critical need for enhanced enforcement of laws designed to combat cybercrimes against children, specifically referencing the Anti-OSAEC Law. The senator voiced her concern over the continued use of social media platforms to facilitate such egregious crimes, despite existing legal frameworks imposing stricter responsibilities on digital platforms.
"As the author of the law, I am disappointed that its implementation does not seem to proactively protect children from this unspeakable violence. I cannot help but think that we are not doing enough," Hontiveros remarked. She acknowledged the efforts of the National Bureau of Investigation Human Trafficking Division for apprehending the suspect in the 10-month-old victim's case, and the National Coordination Center Against OSAEC for their vigilant monitoring of the situation.
Hontiveros highlighted the imperative of a comprehensive national strategy to address the multifaceted and alarming issue, underscoring that the exploitation of children must be unequivocally condemned and eradicated.
