Senators Condemn China Over Alleged Sandy Cay Seizure

Manila: Senators on Monday lashed out at China over its alleged seizure of Sandy Cay, branding it an 'outrageous assault' on Philippine sovereignty and calling for urgent diplomatic and defensive action. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada emphasized the need for the Philippines to 'firmly establish the truth' behind China's claims.

According to Philippines News Agency, Estrada stated that if China's claims are proven to be unfounded, it would constitute another attempt to distort reality and spread misinformation. He urged authorities to address any violations of the country's territorial integrity swiftly.

Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino condemned the occupation as a blatant intrusion into Philippine territorial waters, asserting that such an intrusion must be met with the strongest diplomatic and defensive measures. He reiterated that the West Philippine Sea belongs to the Filipino people and that no intimidation or act of aggression can alter that fact.

Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros described China's actions as a 'photoshoot gimmick,' accusing Beijing of manufacturing drama to support its unfounded claims. Hontiveros stressed that international law affirms Sandy Cay as part of the West Philippine Sea and warned that China's aggressive moves threaten not only Sandy Cay but also the nearby Pag-asa Island and Filipino fishing rights.

The senators are calling for an immediate diplomatic protest and a boost in maritime patrols to safeguard Philippine interests in the region.
