Sultan kudarat: A series of weak to moderate earthquakes, or a seismic swarm, is currently affecting parts of Sultan Kudarat and could potentially continue for days or even weeks, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to Philippines News Agency, from late evening on January 19 to early morning on January 23, a total of 765 seismic events were recorded around Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat. Of these, at least 234 earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 5.2, were accurately located by Phivolcs.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol explained that the swarm was generated by the Cotabato Trench and reflects the gradual release of built-up stress in a tectonically active area. Bacolcol mentioned that the stress originates from pressure accumulation beneath the surface. While there is no fixed timeline for how long the swarm might persist, it could last from hours to weeks.

Bacolcol highlighted that most swarm events remain weak to moderate, though the possibility of stronger earthquakes cannot be ruled out, particularly in regions near active trenches, faults, and zones with blind faults. Residents are advised to follow standard earthquake safety protocols, such as 'duck, cover, and hold.'

Additionally, Bacolcol urged coastal communities to remain vigilant for natural tsunami warning signs. These communities should evacuate to higher ground if strong shaking is felt, if there is a roaring sound from the sea, or if a sudden drop in sea level is observed.
