Surigao city: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 13 has issued a warning to the residents of Surigao del Norte, particularly those in the vicinity of Litalit Bay, San Benito, Siargao Island, due to the detection of paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) in local shellfish samples.

According to Philippines News Agency, the advisory came after tests were conducted on samples from the bay using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), which confirmed the presence of the toxin. BFAR-13 has urged the public to refrain from collecting, selling, and consuming all types of shellfish and Acetes sp., locally known as 'alamang,' from the affected area. This move aims to protect the community's health and the local fishing industry.

The advisory clarified that other marine products like fish, crabs, and squid could still be consumed if their entrails are removed and they are thoroughly washed before cooking. The findings from BFAR-13 have been forwarded to the BFAR Central Office for further confirmatory testing.

In response to the situation, BFAR-13 is working closely with local government units to enhance the information campaign, ensuring that residents are aware of the potential risks associated with shellfish from Litalit Bay.
